Khwai Leadwood is one of the newest developments in the African Bush Camps portfolio. The camp is located on a beautiful site within this community-run concession on the eastern border of the Moremi Game reserve, adjacent to Khwai Tented Camp.
Khwai Leadwood will be a dedicated family camp where families with children of all ages can enjoy the sights and sounds of Africa. The camp will comprise of 2 family units (with interleading walkways/rooms) and 2 standard units built on raised decking, with 180 degree views of the lagoon in front of camp. The rooms will have en suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers and flush toilets.
Activities include game drives, night drives, mokoro safaris and walking safaris as well as special children activities, such as bush walks with our child-specialist guides. The Moremi area is known for its prolific wildlife and provides a patchwork of lagoons, shallow flooded pans, plains and forests with outstanding game viewing activities whether on foot, in game-viewing vehicles or on boat.
On special request Khwai Leadwood can be booked in conjunction with Khwai Tented Camp to cater for larger, private groups.
Comfortable and spacious luxury Sail Tents elegantly set-up on wooden decking overlooking the tranquil waters of the lagoon. Accommodation includes en-suite bathroom facilities with flush toilets.
Besides the day-time drives which can feature Africa’s big attractions – lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe – guests at Khwai Tented Camp are able to explore nature after sunset with a night drive. This activity, along with the guided walking safaris, is not usually permitted in the National Parks or Game reserves, and allows guests to get an up close and personal experience with some of Africa’s nocturnal and / or more elusive animals. The camp also provides the opportunity to explore the great stands of leadwood and mopane woodlands as well as open grasslands and banks of the Khwai river on foot.
Preserving the romance of yester-year, a simpler life in harmony with nature, Khwai Leadwood will leave you longing to return to Africa. There are no permanent structures; everything can be removed to leave the wilderness exactly as it was found, minimizing the impact on the environment.
Guided walks are available at Khwai Leadwod.
Guided walks normally depart from the camp after breakfast, the duration of the walk will depend solely on the group walking.
The Bird life at Khwai Leadwood is phenomenal and the perfect place to view such a wide variety of species. From beginners to avid birders this is the place for you.
On the afternoon game drive just before sunset guests will stop at a secluded spot where the professional guide will stop the vehicle and unpack tables, drinks and snacks for guests to enjoy before departing on a night game drive.
Night Drives are offered as an optional activity at Khwai Leadwood and can be arranged on request. Most of our afternoon game drive continue into Night Game Drives if all guests on the vehicle wish to continue their safari experience.
Khwai Leadwood is situated on a beautiful lagoon, therefore allowing us to run breathtaking Mokoro experiences. This activity is seasonal (when water levels permit).
A Mokoro is a traditional canoe which is normally made by digging out the trunk of a large tree. However to preserve the trees and national parks we have moulded our Mokoros out of Fibreglass.
Khwai Leadwood offers Bush Lunches or Bush Dinners on request
The African Bush Camps Foundation is committed to empowering rural communities. The camp is a partner with communities on the outskirts of wildlife areas to become economically sustainable whilst ensuring that natural resources are protected and cared for. They also support local schools and run education programmes for children in communities. Guests who stay with at Khwai Tented Camp are invited to visit the Khwai Community Area in Botswana to take a cultural tour of the nearby villages. This helps travellers gain a deeper understanding of the country they are visiting and its people. As extraordinary as a safari is, these tours allows you to engage with Africa and its rich cultural heritage.
Children of all ages are welcome.
