Greystoke Mahale sits on a pristine, white sandy beach overlooking the waters of Lake Tanganyika, with the forest of 8000 ft Mahale Mountains behind.
Greystoke Mahale has just 6 wood and thatch bandas that are tucked back into the forest line so that the only view would be the beach and the lake.
The rooms are made from sustainable materials sourced from Lake Tanganyika. The wood used is reclaimed from old dug out dhows bought from local villagers. Each one has an en-suite bathroom, accessible by a short boardwalk , with hot and cold running water, strong showers and flush toilets. Dressing room and upstairs chill-out deck.
The only structure on the beach is the main mess area, where on a clear day one can see the Congo Mountains in the horizon..
Your day would start with a hearty breakfast listening to the news of the Chimpanzees and decisiding what you would like to do for the day. Evening end with sundowners on the rocks as you watch the African sun setting.
Greystoke leaves you wanting more being so remote with mountains one side and beach on the other with a wide lake infornt you are awe inspired.
Your hike would involve looking for birds, butterflies and other shy animals along with trekking Chimpanzee. You can also swim in ice-cold pools in the Mountain waterfalls, take a kayak for a dawn paddle in the lake
Most guests will see chimpanzees at least once in 3 to 4 days of stay, but the sightings are never guaranteed. Once you are with the Chimps you are allowed 1 hour to hang out with them and watch them as they play, groom and forage on the ground around you. You would be required to wear a light surgical mask to avoid any germs being transferred to then as they share so much of our DNA and are very prone to catching all our coughs and sneezes.
Goof hiking boots is a must and some treks are tasking, so you would need to be fairly fit. Clothing has to be protective to avoid nasty creeper ( The Buffalo Bean )n the forest latching on to you which would cause skin irritation.
Clothing colours should be greens, browns, neutrals
There is no road within 60 km of the Camp. The only access is via the lake or flight.
Children over 8 years old are welcome
The camp is open year round except for mid March – early June when the camp closes for some maintenance, and our wonderful staff enjoy a brief return to ‘civilization’.
