Choose Ubon Safari as your tour operator and discover the fantastic Baileys Banda Beho Beho camp in Tanzania. Beho Beho is known as ‘wansalishi’ which means when translated from Swahili “The Pioneer”. The Baileys Banda Beho Beho was the first camp in the Northern sector of the Selous game reserve. Its stone cottages offer panoramic views over the Rufiji River flood plain. The camp was originally a hunting camp.
The camp is 3 miles from the grave of the famous explorer, Frederick Courtney Selous. Beho Beho has 8 individual spacious Baileys Bandas which are built from stone and thatched palm. The Bandas are furnish with king-sized beds, comfortable furniture, en-suite bathroom with twin sinks, high flush WC and open air shower. The verandah is spacious and secured with tinted curtains.
The climate in Selous is warm and humid as it is close to the equator. Beho Beho is on a hillside offers cool breeze in the afternoons. The main camp offers comfortable seating and dining areas as well as protected by a huge palm thatched roof. Guest can also enjoy playing on a full sized billiards table or relax and enjoy the spectacular view. Also, guest can swim in the swimming pool where they can look at the views of the Kipalala Valley.
Guests can have breakfast in the bush as the camp changes venues during your stay. The Baileys Banda Beho Beho camp has its own generator offering 240V 50hx electricity. Lights and power points in each Banda offer electricity for charging computers, camera batteries. WIFI is available the Bandas. However, the connection can be slow due to the remote area.
Game drives are in 4wd special adapted open sided vehicles with shaded raised seats offering excellent photographic opportunities. Safaris are accompanied by armed rangers. Walking safaris are permitted by armed guides which will last between 3 and 5 hours depending on the weather.
Guests will do an activity during their stay. Lake Tagalala is about a 45 minute drive across the park where guests would enjoy a boat safari lasting one hour. Guests have the opportunity to view games such as hippos and crocodiles in their environment. Breakfast would be taken on the lake shore followed by a visit to the hot springs where you can swim in the thermal waters arriving back camp at around 14:00hrs.
Children above 12 years are welcome. Although, parents must be aware that there is an adult atmosphere at meal times. The Baileys Banda Beho Beho camp is closed from 21 March to 1 June each year due to heavy rain.
Guests can also experience the tree house as optional if they stay a minimum of 4 nights. Designed for 2 people, the tree house experience starts mid-afternoon when guests leave camp on foot, accompanied by an armed ranger and walk through the splendid isolation of the Selous wilderness until they arrive at their home for the night.
The tree house is alongside with the giant leadwood overlooking the dry river bed. Guests have the real sleeping in the tree feeling but with a difference, this one comes with a double bed swathed in mosquito netting and an en-suite bathroom complete with flush toilet.
There is a choice of either sleeping under the stars or under the cover of a canvas pavilion. The bed comes complete with wheels, fine bed linen and a comfortable duvet. In fact, it’s everything one could wish for when sleeping up a tress in the middle of the African wilderness. Guests are welcomed with cocktails before being able to take a hot sower on arrival.
After a romantic night of star gazing and being entertained by the sounds of the bush, the dawn brings birdsong and early morning tea, before heading off on foot to see the animals at their most prolific, returning for breakfast, where a suitably attired chef will cook up a gourmet breakfast to satisfy the heartiest appetite.
Guests can complete the experience by either walking or game driving back to camp by safari vehicle to resume the rest of their Beho Beho safari itinerary. This has a supplementary cost.
Please note:
* This kind of option is fraught with local difficulties, rain, heat, dust, mud, insects, animal movements etc etc – so all Treehouse experiences are operated at the discretion of the senior guide in camp at Beho Beho. The guide will decide which is the most suitable night of the four nights stay that guests will be able to enjoy this activity. If for whatever reasons pre-booked guests are not able to participate in this activity a full refund will be given to the booking agent and the guests will receive a complimentary voucher for a Treehouse night to be taken at another time in the future.
For Privacy and Exclusivity Bailey’s Banda( ‘owner’s house’ )or private villa is positioned on the hillside overlooking the main camp offers stunning views into the valley and the hippo pools. Bailey’s Banda is still part of the camp but enjoys its privacy and is the perfect hideaway for those who want to appreciate the bush without the ‘camaraderie’ of staying in a ‘house party-style’ camp like Beho Beho.
Staying in Bailey’s Banda is very much like having your own house in Africa, a luxurious haven for exploring the magnificent Selous game reserve, but on your own terms – whether it is on foot, in your exclusive safari vehicle or your exclusive private boat on nearby Lake Tagalala. Guests during the heat of the day can have their own private pool, sun deck or the shade of a sun-umbrella and in the evenings dinner under the stars before settling down in the comfort of your own sitting room to enjoy some music or a movie before bed.
With two very spacious Beho Beho style en suite bedrooms – one of them raised up on first floor level – both with king-sized beds and the possibility to use the Zanzibar divan bed to create a twin bedded room, Bailey’s Banda is ideal for honeymooners, friends travelling together, or families (but still not really suitable for children under twelve years ).
The open-plan and open-sided main areas of the banda have many combinations of dining and relaxing spaces, together with a plunge pool and sunbathing/game viewing deck. The accent is on privacy and enjoying the quality ‘private time’ that is sometimes hard to find on safari, with dedicated staff, its own kitchen (complete with chef) and exclusive safari vehicle. Game activities are tailor-made to suit each guest and are guided and guarded by some of the most qualified guides in East Africa
